Everything About AmpliFi Mesh Technology

You must be wondering about the mastermind behind the design and development of Amplifi Wifi mesh technology. Robert J Pera joined the wireless hardware team of Apple Computer. His initial project was the Industry’s first-ever 802.11g Apple Airport router that offered an ultra-fast speed of 54Mbps in 2003.

You may say that the design is two decades old. Nonetheless, this pioneer router influenced the creation of next-generation routers and mesh technology.

The Apple router delivered a smooth experience due to auto-detection and configuration utility. The second provided a sleek industrial design with integrated antennas inside the enclosure.

Furthermore, the third and fourth generations of AirPort Extreme were released in 2009. The fifth generation was available in the market in 2011. These routers featured antenna improvements and Time Machine capability to back up the Mac wirelessly.

Without any doubt, the 2012 and 2013 AirPort updates and redesigns offered better speed and additional USB ports. Not only that, but these routers featured a futuristic, sleek and stylish design.

In 2016, Apple disbanded the team which worked on the AirPort routers. Eventually, Apple stopped the router production and officially discontinued it in 2018.

Robert J Pera drew inspiration from the Apple Airport to design the UniFi Ubiquiti wireless access point. It’s essentially a software-defined networking (SDN) platform that connects and unifies different networking devices, such as switches, routers, etc.

The Amplifi Alien has demonstrated excellent security as a standalone gateway.

Mac Help Nashville, Inc. is proud to participate in CISA’s cyber hygiene project. In fact, the gateway that has held our corporate static IP for the last year and has faced weekly cyber hygiene scans from Homeland Security is the Amplifi Alien. Each week that our static IP (Amplifi Alien) is scanned for security weaknesses we receive a clean bill of health.

Explaining AmpliFi Alien WiFi 6 Unit Performance

The AmpliFi Alien Wifi 6 unit has a tri-band radio with 2.4 and 5 GHz 802.11ax radios that offer superfast Wifi 6 performance.

You should know that 802.11ax or Wifi 6 is the latest version of the 802.11 wireless standards offering 30 times faster speed than the Wifi 5. As a result, the maximum theoretical speed offered by Wifi 6 reaches a whopping 9.6 Gbps.

AmpliFi is essentially the younger smarter brother of UniFi that enhances or amplifies your smart home wireless performance and coverage. In other words, AmpliFi successfully minimizes the wireless dead spots in your home.

Other features of the AmpliFi Alien include DFS channel support and touchscreen display. Lucky for you, the AmpliFi teleport offers a configuration-free VPN solution, thus guaranteeing secure online browsing and streaming experience. Hence, you can redirect your web traffic via the home network if you are away from home.

The AmpliFi Alien features a futuristic, sleek design with app-based controls and setup. This device resembles a black colored cylinder with greenish-yellow light rings around the base, resembling a smart speaker.

The vertical design houses multiple antennas right on the top, offering better performance. In addition, you can place the device anywhere on the work desk, thanks to the smaller footprint.

Furthermore, the availability of an LCD touchscreen certainly adds a nice touch to the overall design. You won’t use the LCD much due to the app-based controls. Nonetheless, the LCD efficiently reminds you about the firmware updates and device activation.

It’s entirely up to you to dim the touch screen and LED lights as a lightbulb or turn them off to enjoy uninterrupted sleep.

AmpliFi Alien WiFi 6 Unit Setup

One of the most significant advantages of using the AmpliFi Alien Wifi 6 is its straightforward setup. All you need to do is to follow these steps to enhance your home Wifi coverage throughout the square feet of your home:

  • First, you can plug the device into the power outlet.
  • It can take the Static IP if you have a business class ISP.
  • The next step is to connect it to the modem using an Ethernet cable.
  • Once the device is connected to the Internet, it’s time to download the AmpliFi app on your iOS or Android device. Alternatively, you can use the web interface to configure the AmpliFi Alien Wifi 6.
  • You should give your wireless network a name and password on the app. After following the setup instructions on the app, the AmpliFi Alien Wifi 6 will be up and running within minutes.

If your internal WiFi network has slow speeds with Amplifi it is probably because you have no backbone connection to the other mesh units with ethernet.

AmpliFi Alien WiFi 6 Unit Functionality

This advanced Wifi 6 wireless device works on the principle of combining three Wifi bands – 2.4 and 5 GHz supporting Wifi 6 and the thor 5 GHz radio band, which supports the Wifi 5 technology.

Using these bands as individual wireless networks with their SSID and password depends on your wireless network requirements. As a result, you have complete control over distributing the wireless bands among the compatible devices.

For example, you can use the faster Wifi 6 5GHz band for the backhaul data transmission between the router and the device. This way, you’ll be using the other two bands to enhance the wireless coverage within your home.

However, you’ll have one Wifi 6 and another Wifi 5 band to address the wireless dead spots. As a result, you can use the 5GHz Wifi 5 band for smart home devices and gaming. Nonetheless, AmpliFi Alien offers you the flexibility to address the wireless coverage according to your Internet usage and Wifi requirements.

Teleport VPN Service

One of the most noteworthy features of the AmpliFi Alien is the availability of the Teleport VPN service.

You need to enter your username and password to open the AmpliFi app outside your home. Next, you can submit a request for the five-digit code. Now you must enter the total duration you want to access your home Wifi network.

You’ll open a separate Teleport app on your smart device, such as Android, iOS, or Android TV, which you want to access. Next, you can enter the passcode on this device.

AmpliFi essentially uses Wireguard to encrypt the online traffic while rerouting the traffic back to your home via the cloud. The best part is that you can enjoy this security free without paying any additional cost.

The missing multi-gig ports may be its downfall.

Network troubleshooters hunt and destroy 10/100 switches and legacy equipment that clog and slow down that network.
It is already happening, and will very soon happen even more often, that network troubleshooters will look for old outdated non 10G compliant 1GIG legacy devices to hunt and destroy them. We Are Coming For You 1GIG!
Most ISP modem/routers have 2.5 gig ports. Ubiquiti failed to add ports that could pass this faster speed into your Wi-Fi network. #FAIL

You can find one 1GIG WAN port and four Gigabit LAN ports at the back; however, the AmpliFi Alien WiFi 6 unit doesn’t include any multi-gig ports. The existing Gigabit Ethernet ports support only 1Gbps speed.

Due to Ubiquiti’s short-sightedness of not adding multi-gig ports, you won’t experience any speeds over 1GIG.

The Amplifi Alien is NOT 10G ready. It’s not even lightly contemplating 10G like the ISPs who are including 2.5 gig ports already.

As long as 1GIG speeds suffice your Internet requirements, the AmpliFi Alien Wifi 6 is undoubtedly an affordable solution to improve Wifi coverage indoors.
We have tested this device and have regularly seen speed tests up to 995MBPS from a 1GIG ISP.
